About this ride

This is a full-day introduction to gravel riding around Cadiz, built on wide riverside tracks. The route covers 34 km with about 250 m of climbing in total, so the effort stays low and there are no sustained ascents to worry about. The surface is broad and forgiving, which gives you space to learn how a gravel bike behaves: how it feels when the tyres move a little under you, how to brake on loose ground and how to hold a line.

Because the distance is short for a full day, the pace leaves room for stops, questions and practice. Nobody is trying to test your legs.

It sits at the gentle end of the Ride Cadiz range. The Cadiz Forest Gravel Loop covers 72 km with moderate climbing, and the Cadiz Volcano Gravel Day is a serious 88 km effort. This ride is the one to book first if you have never left tarmac on a bike, or want to try gravel before committing to a bigger day.

  • 34 km on wide riverside tracks with only 250 m of climbing
  • A first taste of gravel with no pressure to keep up
  • Room to practise braking, cornering and line choice on forgiving surfaces
  • A natural stepping stone to the Forest Gravel Loop

Who this ride suits

This ride is meant for people who are new to gravel. If you can ride a bike comfortably for a few hours on flat ground, you have the fitness for it. Road riders who have never used wider tyres on loose surfaces will find it a safe place to adjust, and so will leisure riders who want to try something beyond a cycle path.

It is a poor fit for strong riders looking for a challenge. With 250 m of climbing over 34 km, there is nothing to push against. Those riders will be happier on the Forest Gravel Loop or the Volcano Gravel Day.

The terrain and what you will learn

The tracks follow the river and are wide, so you can see ahead and pick your line without feeling hemmed in. The surface is packed gravel and earth rather than technical singletrack, with the odd looser patch where you can practise.

Expect to work on a few basics: staying relaxed on the handlebars, shifting your weight when the rear wheel slides, braking early before a corner and not after it, and riding in a group on a surface that gives less grip than tarmac. The climbing is short and gentle, so gears are for rhythm rather than survival.

How it compares with other Cadiz tours

If you want flat and traffic-free on a more relaxed footing, the Cadiz greenway easy day runs 40 km on a railway path to the coast. This ride has a similar easy feel, but the surface is rougher and you learn real gravel handling.

The next step up is the Cadiz Forest Gravel Loop: 72 km, shaded tracks and moderate climbing. Riders who enjoy this intro often move on to it. The Old Town e-bike ride is a different thing altogether, built around sightseeing rather than off-road skills.

Best time to go

Spring and autumn usually give the most comfortable riding for a full day outdoors, with mild temperatures and drier tracks. In summer, ask the partner about early starts, because there is little shade on open riverside sections and the middle of the day can be hot. After heavy rain the tracks can be soft in places, so check conditions with the partner when booking.

Good to know

Do I need gravel riding experience?

No. The ride is designed as a first off-road outing, on wide tracks with little climbing. Being comfortable riding a bike for several hours is enough.

How hard is the ride?

It is easy. The route is 34 km with about 250 m of climbing in total, so there are no long or steep ascents.

Is it harder than the greenway day?

Slightly. The greenway is 40 km of flat railway path, while this ride has rougher surfaces and a little more climbing, but both are suited to newer riders.

What should I ask the partner before booking?

Check bike and helmet hire, what is included, group size and start time, as these depend on the partner.
